1. Oil Vulnerability

Peak Oil is an increasingly common term to describe the period at which oil production reaches its maximum, from which point it declines. Many experts predict we will approach Peak Oil between 2007 and 2016. This will bring a reduction in world oil production, causing a significant price spike. Australia's transport system, with its reliance on cars, is particularly vulnerable to high fuel prices.

2. CBD Bicycle Super Station

A key feature of bicycle friendly cities in Europe are Bicycle Super Stations. North American cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle have established Bike Stations in an effort to increase the attractiveness of cycling. The increasing number of CBD bound cyclists mean there is a growing need for end of trip facilities , such as Bicycle Super Stations in Australian capital cities. Such facilities could include:

  • Attended bicycle parking
  • Lockers, showers and change area
  • Café
  • Bicycle store, workshop and bicycle hire
  • Car share 'pod'

3. Valet Bicycle Parking

Valet Bicycle Parking operates at special events where large numbers of people are expected to arrive by bicycle. A temporary bicycle parking enclosure is established outside (or inside) the event. This is a fun, useful way for the organisers of an event to show they support sustainable transport. The Institute offers a full range of bicycle valet services, including bicycle rack hire capable of parking 350 bikes, valet staff and security tracking systems.

4. Public Transport Levy

The Institute for Sensible Transport have proposed a Public Transport Levy to help improve the public transport system. The Public Transport Levy involves using a levy similar to the one used for Medicare, whereby a percentage of Melbournian's income could be used to pay for public transport. The benefit would be a 'ticket less', efficient, user-friendly system. Click for more info or see Frank Fisher's article in the Media section of this site.
