Oil Vulnerability Analysis for the Lake Macquarie region

The Institute for Sensible Transport was engaged by Lake Macquarie City Council to investigate differences in oil vulnerability within their municipality. Located on the central coast of NSW, it is the first study of its type in regional Australia and was based on pioneering work by Jago Dodson and Neil Sipe from Griffith University.

The data used to measure oil vulnerability included:

1. The proportion of residents indicating they used their car to get to work on Census day 2006

2. Car ownership per capita

3. SEIFA Index – a measure of economic resources relative to other areas of Australia.

Understanding the economic benefits of active transport

The Institute for Sensible Transport formed part of an international consortium that recently completed an economic assessment of the benefits of active transport. Commissioned by the Queensland Government, the report is amongst the most comprehensive evaluations of the health, transport and environmental impacts of walking and cycling. This is the first of two reports commissioned to gain a better understanding of how to integrate benefit cost analysis into walking and cycling programs.
