The Institute for Sensible Transport was commissioned by the Cycling Promotion Fund to produce a fact sheet investigating the economic benefits of cycling.

This concise yet comprehensive document outlined the current costs of motorized transport and the economic and environmental benefits associated with cycling.

Cost of physical inactivity in Australia and the potential to lower this through cycling
Economic costs of air and noise pollution, as well as road trauma
A discussion on the safety of cycling
Congestion costs in Australian cities
An explanation of transport related greenhouse gas emissions, current trends and potential savings offered by cycling
An analysis of Australia’s current fuel supply, world petroleum reserves and the threats poses to Australia’s transport system
Recommendations to increase the efficiency of Australia’s transport system and reduce its economic and environmental costs.

Understanding the economic benefits of active transport

The Institute for Sensible Transport formed part of an international consortium that recently completed an economic assessment of the benefits of active transport. Commissioned by the Queensland Government, the report is amongst the most comprehensive evaluations of the health, transport and environmental impacts of walking and cycling. This is the first of two reports commissioned to gain a better understanding of how to integrate benefit cost analysis into walking and cycling programs.
