Fuel Price Vulnerability Planning

Since mid-2005, the world price of crude oil has increased considerably. Supply limitations and surging demand mean that the long term price for oil will continue to rise. This directly impacts on the price of transport fuel in Australia. As a heavily car dependent country, we are particularly vulnerable to fuel price rises. The Institute for Sensible Transport has established itself as a respected voice on innovative, practical measures to reduce Australia's reliance on increasingly expensive transport fuel. We regularly produce articles for both Melbourne major daily newspapers, The Age and Herald Sun , as well as more in depth articles for policy journals.

Our Experience

  • Providing advice to government on fuel vulnerability planning - we acted as a witness on Canberra's Senate Inquiry into Australia's Future Oil Supply and Alternative Transport Fuels.
  • Writing on fuel vulnerability for major Australian newspapers and policy journals.
  • Organising public seminars on Peak Oil
  • Providing advice to business on reducing exposure to high oil price and highlighting investment opportunities
  • Coordinating the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas (Melbourne)

Our Services

  • Consultancy to local, state and federal government on cost effective ways of reducing fuel consumption.
  • Public consultation planning to address 'pain at the pump' issues experienced by the community.
  • Transport behaviour analysis
  • Delivering recommendations to organisations on appropriate measures to reduce oil vulnerability.

The Institute's Director, Elliot Fishman, was called before the Senate Inquiry on Australia's Future Oil Supply and Alternative Transport Fuels. He explained the contribution walking, cycling and public transport could make to the petrol crisis.
