Valet Bicycle Parking

The Institute for Sensible Transport operates Valet Bicycle Parking for special events that promise to attract significant numbers of cyclists.

Why have a Valet Bicycle Parking service?

At big events it is often difficult to find a safe, convenient place to park a bike. It's also a hassle to take all the gadgets off a bike and drag panniers around whilst away from the bike. Valet parking provides a positive message from event organisers to attendees that they encourage sensible, healthy, pollution free transport. In addition to encouraging bicyclists, it also acts as a message to those that have driven their car to the event. The motorist may have had to drive around looking for a paying car space. When they walk from their car to the event, they will see that had they chose to ride their bicycle, they would have received free valet bicycle parking right outside the entrance. It may be small experiences like this that help to tip the balance when making transport choices.

How does Valet Parking work?

  • An area is cordoned off close to the entrance of the event and fitted with temporary bicycle parking structures. This area has bicycle parking attendants at all times
  • Event goers drop their bicycle off and are given a docket with a number on it
  • Their bicycle is parked by our attendants and a corresponding docket placed on their bicycle
  • The bicycle owner presents their docket for bicycle collection

Bike rider drops off their bicycle and is given a numbered docket, St. Jeromes Laneway Festival, 2005.
